Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Charity
Although Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or good Corporate Citizenship tends to be associated with large businesses, a large number of small businesses actively support their communities and charitable causes in a range of ways.
In late 2015 we decided to focus some of our networking efforts on CSR activities in the Colchester area.
The excellent working relationships between members of Essex Networking provide a solid platform from which to launch successive CSR initiatives. Coming together as a team enables us to deliver valuable support to selected worthy causes in a way that we would be too demanding in terms of time and resources to tackle alone – we can also draw on the different skills available within the group to great effect.

Quiz Night in support of Home-Start Colchester and Doucecroft School
Our second annual Quiz Night, to raise funds for Home-Start Colchester and Autism Anglia’s Doucecroft School, took place on Friday 10th March.
The Quiz Night was a fun evening attended by around 70 people who enjoyed the competition, a drink or two, the opportunity to do a little networking, the opportunity to buy clues to questions and to win some great raffle prizes kindly donated by local businesses. And what a fantastic success it turned out to be again this year, raising over £1000.
Congratulation to this year’s winning team – Funktastic – who with 104 points won with nearly a 10 point lead over the runners up.
In addition to saying a big thank you to everyone who came along for the evening we would also like to thank…
- Blackwell Farm Shop – for their vouchers
- Haymans – for a Bottle of Gin and voucher for a tour of their distillery
- Tesco Highwoods – for a Euro Travel Kit
- Wivenhoe House – for a voucher for afternoon tea for two
- Ribbon and Labels Supplies – for a selection of Wilkinsons products
- Maid2Clean Colchester Ltd. – for a selection of Guntons products

The Birkett Long £50 Challenge
We discussed a range of possible approaches to the Birkett Long £50 Challenge to raise funds for St.Helena Hospice – and decided to attended a couple of car boot sales with goods donated by our members as a way of growing the £50 given to us.
The first car boot turned out to be on one of, if not the hottest day of the year, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees at midday! The second sale was towards the end of September, just before the end of the fund raising period, and was an altogether different experience… no rain but certainly cooler and we had to contend with people who were very interested in our ‘stock’ even before it was unloaded and on display! More than once we turned around to find someone rooting around in the car looking for a bargain and in September that was by torch light. It is good to see that some people are very enterprising!
We raised a total of £296.55
Every team that took part was awarded a trophy – we are very proud to have taken part and will be looking at taking the challenge again next year – hopefully beating this year’s total.
Quiz Night in support of Headway Essex
Our first major CSR event, a Quiz Night to raise funds for Headway Essex, took place on Friday 26th February – and what a fantastic success it turned out to be, raising nearly £1100.
The main photograph here shows Essex Networking members Nick Kokolski, Damian Culhane and James Cracknell presenting a cheque to Headway Essex’s Rosie Wren.
The Quiz Night itself was a fun evening attended by around 70 people who enjoyed the competition, a drink or two and the opportunity to do a little networking.
Winning team, ‘The Funky Monkeys’, were so pleased with their trophy that they’re keen to get their names down for our next Quiz Night to defend their ‘title’ in the hope of retaining it! Watch this space for news of our next Quiz Night…
We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the quiz – or donated a raffle prize. We’d also like to say a very big thanks to Jonathan Hemmings of Dream 100 for his support before the event and for being an excellent quiz master.
